How do I create an EDI file?

Electronic data interchange (EDI) is an electronic communication method that provides standards for exchanging data via any electronic means. In Unicentric an EDI file is used to exchange billing data with a clearing house like Change Healthcare (previously Emdeon) or Zirmed.

From the proofing screen, you will have services that map to billable procedures for insurances.

Sending these items will add them onto a batch under the Third Party Billing (3PB) screen. From the Third Party Billing screen is where you can create an EDI file.

Click EDI to open the dialog

From this screen you will see all batches that have not been transmitted in the system. You can select one or many to be included on the EDI file.

Click the Create EDI file button to begin the process of creating the EDI file. Depending on the size of the batches, this could take up to an hour to complete. You can close this window while it processes.

Once finished, there will be an EDI file located in the Fiscal folder (accessible using the "Folder" widget).  Click on the file name to open the EDI dialog.

If the insurance company is set up to transmit to a clearing house (Emdeon) you will see a button on this screen to "Send". If the company is not set up the file will need to be transferred manually through website or ftp. Click on "view file" to download the file to your local machine.
